Le TOTM (tris (2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate) est un plastifiant à faible volatilité qui convient à de nombreuses applications telles que l'isolation des fils et câbles, les outils pour les applications nécessitant des joints d'isolation et des tubes médicaux. C'est également une alternative idéale aux plastifiants phtalates dans les applications où une faible volatilité est d'une importance capitale.
Le poids moléculaire du TOTM le rend moins mobile que le DOTP et d'autres plastifiants monomères. Cela se traduit par une absorption plus lente dans les particules de résine PVC poreuses pendant le mélange.
Faibles taux d'extraction
Le TOTM (Trioctyl Trimellitate) est un excellent plastifiant ramifié de haut poids moléculaire qui convient aux applications nécessitant une très faible volatilité. Cela en fait un excellent choix pour les joints de lave-vaisselle, les pièces intérieures ou moulées automobiles, l'isolation électrique, médicale flexible et les câbles.
De plus, le TOTM est très résistant à l'extraction du PVC. Il est utilisé dans une variété d'applications, y compris le calandrage et l'extrusion.
Dans cette étude, nous démontrons que la spectroscopie RMN à faible champ peut être utilisée pour identifier et quantifier la quantité de divers plastifiants PVC en solution. L'avantage de cette méthode est qu'elle utilise un volume sensible plus important que la méthode standard, ce qui se traduit par des limites de détection plus basses et des LOD plus élevées à la même concentration. Il permet également l'utilisation de solvants non deutérés adaptés pour l'étape d'extraction.
Faibles taux de migration
TOTM a les taux de migration les plus faibles parmi tous les plastifiants testés. Ceci est principalement dû à son poids moléculaire élevé, qui le rend moins sensible à la fissuration sous contrainte.
Il s'agit d'une propriété importante car elle permet aux connecteurs et autres composants rigides de rester en contact avec les tubes en PVC. C'est également une des raisons pour lesquelles le TOTM a été sélectionné pour être utilisé dans les dispositifs médicaux en raison de sa faible migration.
Les processus d'évaporation et de diffusion sont généralement les deux principaux modes de perte de plastifiant. Cependant, il existe une température de transition (Tc) où le processus d'évaporation devient le mode dominant et le processus de diffusion n'est plus aussi fort. Ce décalage de la cinétique est généralement observé à des températures plus basses pour le processus d'évaporation et à des températures plus élevées pour le processus de diffusion.
Excellente résistance à l'extraction
Le plastifiant TOTM est l'un des plastifiants sans phtalate les plus efficaces. Ses excellentes performances, sa flexibilité à basse température et sa résistance à l'extraction par l'eau savonneuse en font un choix idéal pour les plastisols.
Il est également utilisé pour les garnitures intérieures automobiles en vinyle et l'isolation des fils et câbles (TOTM-CA). Le composé confère un degré élevé de résistance à la volatilité aux composés de PVC et conserve l'allongement d'origine après le vieillissement au four à air.
Le GEHTMA-3 contenant des groupes ester, des groupes hydroxyle, des cycles époxy et de l'azote, agit comme agent de compatibilité entre le PVC et le DOTP. Il présente l'avantage d'un degré de ramification élevé et d'un poids moléculaire relatif élevé. De plus, il a une polarité plus élevée que le DOP. Cette propriété est bénéfique pour la suppression de la migration.
Faible toxicité
Le trimellitate de trioctyle (TOTM) est un plastifiant extrêmement peu volatil qui est utilisé dans une large gamme de chlorure de polyvinyle et d'autres plastiques. Il offre d'excellentes propriétés de traitement, des points d'ébullition élevés et une longue durée de conservation.
Contrairement au DEHP, qui peut agir comme toxique pour les humains et les animaux, le TOTM est un plastifiant sans phtalates avec une très faible toxicité. De plus, TOTM est biodégradable et ne contient pas d'inhibiteurs de polymérisation ni de monoglycérides éthoxylés.
Le développement de non-phtalates tels que le TOTM, le phtalate de diisononyle (DINCH) et les diesters issus de l'estérification de l'isosorbide avec des acides gras d'origine végétale représente une alternative potentielle aux phtalates dans les applications PVC. POLYSORB(r) ID 37 est un exemple d'un tel produit. C'est une alternative peu coûteuse, biodégradable et durable aux phtalates et autres additifs chimiques du PVC.
Flexibilité à basse température
La flexibilité à basse température du plastifiant TOTM lui permet d'être utilisé dans les revêtements de fils et de câbles. Le TOTM est également une excellente option pour la résistance à la migration chimique dans les bottes industrielles et d'autres applications nécessitant un matériau résistant.
Un problème courant avec les polymères flexibles est la migration des plastifiants du matériau de base vers les environnements environnants, provoquant une perte de flexibilité et une fragilisation. Cela se produit principalement par trois mécanismes : la volatilisation, la diffusion du centre vers la surface et l'extraction dans les liquides en contact tels que les graisses ou les graisses.
Lorsque les esters de phtalate sont utilisés comme plastifiants primaires dans des mélanges avec le TOTM, la rétention des propriétés d'allongement et de traction est limitée par la volatilité plus élevée des phtalates à des niveaux élevés de phtalate. Lorsque les concentrations de phtalate sont augmentées à plus de 40 % en poids, les propriétés de traction et d'allongement conservées commencent à décliner.
